Description
Kanamycin sulfate is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that has inhibitory effects on both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as mycoplasmas. Its mechanism of action targets the binding to the bacterial 70S ribosomal subunits, thereby inhibiting ribosomal translocation and causing misreading, which further interferes with protein synthesis. Kanamycin sulfate can be used in cell culture to suppress bacterial contamination. In molecular biology research, it is commonly used for selective screening of bacterial colonies that have successfully been transformed with the kanamycin resistance gene (kan gene); it is also often used in Agrobacterium-mediated transformation experiments for the selective screening of plant tissues carrying the npt II (APH(3')-II) gene.
This product is easily soluble in water (100 mg/mL), and it should be filtered and sterilized before use. The recommended working concentration is 30-100 µg/mL.
