IL-11 (interleukin 11) is a pleiotropic cytokine in the IL-6 family, which also includes LIF, CNTF, oncostatin M, cardiotrophin-1, IL-27, and IL-31. In humans, IL-11 has also been found to be an adipogenesis inhibitory factor (AGIF). The aa sequence identity of IL-11 in mature mice with human, rat and canine IL-11 is 88%, 97% and 89%, respectively.IL-11 is secreted by cell types such as osteoblasts, synoviocytes, fibroblasts, chondrocytes, intestinal myofibroblasts, and trophoblasts . It is predominantly present in plasma during inflammation (e.g., inflammation associated with viral infections, cancer, or inflammatory arthritis) and is thought to have primarily anti-inflammatory effects.IL-11 stimulates hematopoiesis and thrombosis, regulates macrophage differentiation, and provides mucosal protection in the intestinal tract. IL-11 has also been found to enhance T-cell polarization to Th2, promote B-cell IgG production, increase osteoclast bone resorption, protect endothelial cells from oxidative stress, and regulate epithelial proliferation and apoptosis.
